Abstract

This study aims to determine the level of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO) in
generation Z Instagram social media users. The method used is descriptive quantitative
with a correlational approach. Data were collected through the FoMO scale questionnaire
developed by Przybylski et al. (2013) and adapted by Mantau (2023), which consists of 20
items (11 favorable and 9 unfavorable) with a Likert scale of 1-5. The research sample
amounted to 105 Gen Z respondents (aged 19-25 years) who actively use Instagram among
students and workers in the area of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang. The results
showed that the majority of respondents (78%) were in the high FoMO category, while the
other 22% were in the low category. Based on the FoMO dimensions, the social anxiety
aspect contributed the most (70%), followed by social interaction (19%) and sense of self
(10%). Partial analysis also revealed that women (82%) experienced high FoMO more
than men (70%), and students (83%) were higher than employed respondents (57%). In
addition, the 21-22 age group had the highest proportion of FoMO (84%) compared to
other age ranges. This finding confirms that social anxiety is the main aspect of FoMO in
Gen Z, and shows differences in FoMO levels based on gender, status, and age range.
