Abstract

The use of social media can have both positive and negative impacts. Good emotional regulation is necessary in the use of social media, especially in generation Z. One factor that influences emotional regulation is religiosity. With increasing religiosity, it is expected that individuals have good emotional control, so they are not easily influenced by the negative impacts of social media. The purpose of this study was to examine the role of religiosity on emotional regulation in social media users among generation Z. Respondents in this study were 297 vocational high school students aged 15-19 years who actively use social media, taken using incidental sampling techniques. This research instrument used the Emotion Regulation Scale (ERQ) by Gross & John which has been adapted into an Indonesian version by Radde et al. While the measurement of religiosity used The Centrality of Religiosity Scale (CSR) from Huber & Huber and has been modified into Indonesian by Purnomo & Suryadi. Data were analyzed using simple linear regression techniques with the help of the SPSS program. The results of the study showed that religiosity significantly influences emotional regulation in Generation Z social media users. Religiosity contributed 28.7% to cognitive reappraisal strategies, while 24.3% to expressive suppression strategies. Religiosity's influence was greater on cognitive reappraisal strategies than on expressive suppression strategies.
