Abstract

This study aims to explore Religious Moderation Based on Islamic Religious Education at SMAN 1 Berau. The research method used an interpretive paradigm, a qualitative approach, a case study research type, and data collection techniques including observation, interviews, and document analysis. The data analysis technique applied is interactive analysis, which involves a continuous and repetitive process of interpreting data. The research findings indicate that: (1) The community at SMAN 1 Berau has diverse understandings of religious moderation. However, in general, this diversity of meanings can be summarized into seven meanings, namely: 1) the same as tolerance, 2) respecting differences, 3) mutual respect, 4) no hostility, 5) firm in one’s convictions, 6) a balanced attitude with a comprehensive understanding of religion, and 7) thinking intelligently and carefully in matters of religion. (2) Religious practice in the context of Islamic religious education is realized through various activities both inside and outside the classroom. The implementation is as follows: 1) enforcing punctuality in arriving at school, 2) classroom learning activities, 3) Pancasila student project activities, 4) classroom cleaning duty activities, 5) Monday and national holiday ceremonies, 6) group exercises at school or outside school, and 7) religious holiday activities. Practices reflecting the value of religious moderation can be carried out while respecting students' freedom of expression at SMAN 1 Berau.
