Abstract
Emerging adulthood is a transitional phase from adolescence to early adulthood, where individuals have full control over themselves, allowing them to explore their identity. Often, this leads to self-comparisons, which can affect one’s perception of body satisfaction. Social media has become the main platform in this era, and it particularly has negative impacts on the body image of emerging adulthood women. This study aims to examine the effect of social media use on body satisfaction moderated by self-compassion. The study involved 295 participants using scales for social media addiction tendency, body image satifaction scale, and self-compassion. Data analysis was conducted using Moderated Regression Analysis (MRA) with PROCESS Hayes 27. Based on the analysis results, self-compassion acts as a moderator with a value of (β = -0.291; p = 0.000), weakening the effect of social media use on body satisfaction in emerging adulthood women. The negative effect of social media use on body satisfaction was stronger for women with low self-compassion compared to those with high self-compassion.
