Abstract
This study aims to explore the level of interpersonal communication openness that occurs between stepmothers and stepchildren from the perspective of Social Penetration Theory. This research employs a qualitative approach with a case study method. The subjects of this study are stepmothers who live in the same household as their stepchildren.
The results of this study indicate that stepmothers tend to disclose general information at the early stages of their relationship, such as daily habits, childhood experiences, and life principles. Private information is only revealed when the emotional bond between the stepmother and stepchild has deepened. This gradual disclosure is done to avoid potential conflict in the early stages of the relationship.
As time goes by, when the stepchild responds positively and shows acceptance toward the information shared, the stepmother begins to reveal more private aspects of herself, including past traumas, family conflicts, and emotional exhaustion. The stepmother demonstrates openness through caring actions and emotional support. Through genuine and empathetic communication, the stepmother strives to build a strong emotional bond with her stepchild, fostering a harmonious relationship based on mutual trust.
Interpersonal communication openness between stepmothers and stepchildren cannot occur instantly; rather, it requires stages and strategies to build understanding and emotional closeness over time.
