Abstract
This research focuses on the formation of Black Lives Matter in the United States by Afro-Americans. The Black Lives Matter movement is a collective response to the racial injustice that continues to be experienced by the Afro-American community in the United States. This thesis aims to examine how the emergence of the Black Lives Matter movement as a form of resistance to racial discrimination, by highlighting social dynamics, the history of racial tensions, and the trigger factors behind mass mobilization. In this research, the author uses Neil J. Smelser's Value-Added Theory as an analytical framework to explain the stages that led to the formation of the social movement. The results show that Black Lives Matter did not emerge suddenly, but is a historical legacy of colonialism, institutional violence, and ongoing structural inequality. Black Lives Matter represents symbolic and tangible resistance to a system that is considered unjust, and emphasizes the importance of justice, equality, and recognition of the dignity of black lives. Through understanding the process of Black Lives Matter's emergence, this thesis contributes to the study of social movements and contemporary racial justice issues.
