Abstract
ABSTRACT
Indonesian essential oils have great potential for development due to their high economic value Indonesian essential oils have great potential for development due to their high economic value and extensive health benefits. One of the essential oil-producing plants is Curcuma aeruginosa Roxb. (black ginger), whose essential compound content is useful in the pharmaceutical field. This study aims to determine the effect of distillation methods and material reduction methods on the yield and quality of essential oils produced from black ginger. The parameters observed were: yield (%), refractive index, specific gravity, solubility in 70% alcohol, percent antioxidant inhibition (DPPH), and chemical compound profile (GC-FID). This study used a completely randomized design (CRD) namely distillation methods (water distillation, steam distillation) and material reduction methods (grated, crushed) with three replications for each variation. The results showed that the distillation method and material reduction method had a significant effect on the yield and percent antioxidant inhibition (DPPH), but did not significantly affect the physical properties and GC-FID results. Although the water distillation method has the highest yield based on other parameters, the steam distillation method for mash reduction is recommended due to its cost-effectiveness and practicality.
