Abstract

Nampu (Homalomena aromatica Schott) is a plant from the Araceae family commonly found in Indonesia and widely used in aromatherapy due to its volatile aromatic compounds. This study aimed to compare the quality of essential oils extracted from Nampu rhizomes using two distillation methods, namely water distillation and steam-water distillation, with variations in particle size (passed and retained on a 4-mesh sieve). The observed parameters included yield, specific gravity, refractive index, solubility in alcohol, antioxidant activity (DPPH), and chemical composition analysis using GC-FID. The experiment was arranged in a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with two factors and 12 experimental units. The results showed that steam-water distillation with material retained on a 4-mesh sieve produced the highest yield of 0.27%. Physical properties (specific gravity, refractive index, and solubility in alcohol) showed no significant differences among treatments. Steam-water distillation with material retained on a 4-mesh sieve was identified as the most optimal method, as it produced essential oil with good yield, high antioxidant activity, and better suitability for industrial-scale applications.
