Abstract
The use of X social media is increasingly widespread among adolescents; however, the phenomenon of the toxic online disinhibition effect (TODE) indicates a tendency toward aggressive, impulsive, or uncontrolled behavior in online interactions. This study aims to examine the effect of self-control on TODE among adolescent X social media users. The research employed a quantitative approach with a correlational method. The participants consisted of 359 adolescents aged 11–20 years, residing in East Java, selected using the accidental sampling technique. The instruments used were the Self-Control Scale (SCS) and the Toxic Online Disinhibition Effect Scale (TODE), both adapted into Indonesian. Data were analyzed using simple linear regression. The results showed a regression coefficient of β = - 0.463, p < 0.01, indicating a significant negative effect of self-control on TODE. This finding suggests that the higher the self-control, the lower the tendency for TODE behaviors among adolescents. The study provides important implications for the development of digital literacy programs, interventions to enhance self-control, and the design of social media features that promote healthy online behavior.
