Abstract

The transition period from education to the workforce is a critical phase for fresh graduates, often marked by uncertainty, social pressure, and demands for independence. These conditions can trigger anxiety, particularly among individuals who exhibit intolerance of uncertainty (IU). This study aims to examine the relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and anxiety in fresh graduates. This research employed a quantitative correlational approach with an incidental sampling technique. The participants consisted of 393 fresh graduates aged 21–25 years who had no prior work experience. The instruments used were the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale-12 (IUS-12) and a modified version of the Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HARS). Data analysis was conducted using Spearman’s rho correlation due to the non-normal distribution of the data. The results indicated a significant positive relationship between intolerance of uncertainty and anxiety (r = 0.383; p < 0.001). Although the majority of participants (85%) were classified as having low IU and over half (51.9%) reported no symptoms of anxiety, statistical analysis revealed that IU significantly predicted anxiety, contributing 14.7% to its variance. This finding suggests that higher levels of IU are associated with higher levels of anxiety. The study concludes that intolerance of uncertainty significantly contributes to anxiety among fresh graduates. These findings are expected to serve as a foundation for developing psychological interventions to help individuals cope more adaptively with future uncertainty.
