Abstract

Emerging adulthood is a stressful period for individuals due to the high social expectations they must fulfill. During this period, individuals often experience anxiety, insecurity, and high stress levels due to various demands placed upon them. One form of parental pressure on individuals is the expectation to quickly complete higher education and secure employment at a large company. This instability can make individuals vulnerable to mental stress and anxiety. This phenomenon can trigger the emergence of fear of negative evaluation or fear of negative judgment from others. This study aims to determine the influence of self-esteem and gender on fear of negative evaluation during emerging adulthood. During emerging adulthood, self-esteem and gender are among the factors that influence the level of fear of negative evaluation in individuals. This study uses a quantitative approach with convenience sampling techniques. A total of 217 subjects in the emerging adulthood stage participated in this study. The instruments used were the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale by Rosenberg with an α value of 0.804 and the Brief Fear of Negative Evaluation Scale by Leary with an α value of 0.882. Data analysis was conducted using multiple linear regression processed using Jamovi 2.3.21 software. The results of this study indicate that self-esteem has a significant negative effect on fear of negative evaluation, and gender has a significant effect on fear of negative evaluation.
