Abstract

The main priority for national electricity is the utilization of new and renewable energy. A micro-hydro power plant (MHPP) is one form of renewable energy with significant potential for development. One highly potential location is the Kaenah Irrigation Area in Rowosari Village, Sumberjambe District, Jember Regency. Despite having favorable topographical conditions and a relatively stable water discharge, this irrigation area has not yet been optimized as a source of electrical energy. The design of this MHPP is based on a literature review and data analysis.A technical assessment of the Kaen's Irrigation Channel potential indicates that the available water, with a design discharge of 0.468 m³/s and a head of 4.22 meters, can generate a potential power output of 12.271 kW using a crossflow turbine. The detailed design of the civil and mechanical components includes: 1) A forebay tank measuring 2 m x 2.5 m x 3 m with a storage capacity of 10.95 m³, 2) A penstock with a 0.5 m diameter, a length of 25.5 m, and a thickness of 2.5 mm, 3) A crossflow turbine with a specific speed (Nq) of 129.8, a runner diameter D1 of 0.6 m, and D2 of 0.4 m, 4) A powerhouse with dimensions of 3.5 m x 3.5 m, 5) A rectangular tailrace with a length of 0.8 m and a height of 0.9 m. Based on the research findings, the Kaenah Irrigation Area is considered technically feasible as a location for the construction of a Micro Hydro Power Plant (MHPP).
