Abstract

This research was motivated by the high psychological pressure faced by inmates during their imprisonment, which affects their mental health. Optimism is believed to be one of the internal factors that can strengthen mental resilience and improve psychological well-being. Optimism to encourage prisoners to improve hardship and sustain a belief that their future can improve. This study aims to examine the influence of future optimism on the mental health of inmates at the Class IIA Correctional Facility in Malang City. This research used a quantitative correlational approach with a sample of 148 female inmates selected through purposive sampling, with the criterion of having received a prison sentence of five years or more. The instruments used are an optimism scale and the Mental Health Inventory (MHI-38). Regression analysis results show a significant positive influence of optimism on inmates' mental health (p < 0.05) with an R2 value of 0.335. This means that optimism explains 33.5% of the variability in inmates’ mental health. These findings indicate that optimism plays an important role as a protective factor in maintaining inmates’ mental health and should be integrated into correctional guidance and rehabilitation programs.
