Abstract

The Library of Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang (UMM) is one of the Technical Implementation Units (UPT) within the university, functioning to support the implementation of the university’s tri dharma of higher education. The UMM Library offers various facilities such as reading rooms, a digital library, journal access rooms, and public areas. In addition, it provides services including Online Public Access Catalog (OPAC), loan checking, and self-service borrowing. This study identified several issues in the business processes, particularly related to service delivery. Therefore, a comprehensive evaluation is necessary to improve these processes and enhance overall service quality. This research proposes a redesign of business processes using the Business Process Reengineering (BPR) approach. BPR is a methodology aimed at fundamentally rethinking and radically redesigning business processes to achieve significant improvements in critical performance measures such as efficiency and competitiveness. The business process design in this study was conducted using standard process mapping tools from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) to facilitate clear and structured analysis. One of the processes subjected to improvement was the Locker Borrowing process. The redesigned process was then evaluated using throughput efficiency analysis. The initial throughput efficiency was recorded at 42.85714285714286%, while the redesigned process demonstrated an increase to 50%, with a total processing time of 35 sec. These findings indicate a substantial enhancement in process efficiency and confirm the potential of the proposed business process to optimize service performance in the Locker Borrowing system at the UMM Library.
