Abstract
Smartphones have become an indispensable necessity for adolescents, serving as a means to connect with others and access a wide range of information. For many teenagers, smartphones are often used as a tool in the process of identity exploration. However, excessive use may lead to dependency, resulting in behaviors such as phubbing—the act of ignoring one’s surroundings or interlocutors in favor of a smartphone. This behavior is frequently driven by a psychological phenomenon known as fear of missing out (FoMO), particularly in relation to updates and interactions on social media platforms. This study aims to investigate the influence of fear of missing out on phubbing behavior among high school students. A quantitative correlational approach was employed, involving 225 students from X Senior High School, selected through cluster sampling. The instruments used in this research were the Generic Scale of Phubbing (GSP) and the Online Fear of Missing Out Scale (On-FoMO). Data analysis was conducted using multiple linear regression. The findings revealed a significant effect of fear of missing out on phubbing behavior, with FoMO accounting for 91.8% of the variance in phubbing among the students.
