Abstract
Background: Stiff neck pain due to static work postures, such as those associated with sewing, is a common musculoskeletal complaint. This condition can impair neck functional ability and reduce work productivity. This functional ability focuses on neck function, including joint range of motion, flexibility, and pain sensation, which ultimately impacts neck function in carrying out daily activities.
Objective: This study aimed to determine the effect of a combination of Ischemic Compression and Contract-Relax Stretching techniques on improving neck functional ability in tailors experiencing stiff neck pain.
Methods: The study used a pre-experimental design with a one-group pretest-posttest approach. Subjects were 10 tailors in the Srikandi Babussalam garment industry in Malang who met the inclusion criteria. The intervention was administered for 2 weeks, with two sessions per week, consisting of a combination of IC (3 repetitions) and CRS (2 sets of 6 repetitions). Neck functional ability was measured using the Neck Disability Index (NDI) questionnaire before and after the intervention. Results: Data analysis using a paired t-test showed a significance value of 0.002 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant difference between the NDI values before and after the intervention. The mean NDI pre-test score was 20.56 and post-test score was 10.47, indicating an increase in neck functional ability after the intervention.
Conclusion: The combination of ischemic compression and contract-relax stretching techniques significantly improved neck functional ability in tailors experiencing stiff neck pain. This intervention can be recommended as a conservative treatment approach in similar cases.
