Abstract

This study analyzes the efforts of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in strengthening food security in South Asia as a response to the long-term impacts of the Green Revolution during the period 2015–2023. Although the Green Revolution initially boosted agricultural productivity, it also created dependency on external inputs and exacerbated economic inequality and environmental degradation. Using a qualitative descriptive method and Theotonio Dos Santos’s dependency theory, this research evaluates the implementation of the Home-Grown School Feeding (HGSF), Agro-Ecological Systems (AES), and Conservation Agriculture (CA) programs in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh. The findings reveal that these FAO programs have significantly contributed to improving food security, empowering farmers, strengthening local food systems, and promoting environmental conservation and women’s empowerment. However, structural challenges such as limited access to land and funding remain persistent barriers. This study highlights the importance of synergy between national policies and international programs in achieving just and sustainable food security in the region.
