AN ANALAYSIS OF MORAL VALUES PORTRAYED IN THE FILM “FREEDOM WRITERS” DIRECTED BY RICHARD LAGRAVENESE

This research analyzes the kinds of moral values depicted in the film "Freedom Writers" by Richard LaGravenese. The research aims to identify and analyze various moral values presented throughout the film, including justice, wisdom, courage, self-control, trust, empathy, humility, resilience, and hope as educational tools for character development.
This research used a qualitative research method to analyze moral values in "Freedom Writers." focusing on three main characters: Erin Gruwell as the dedicated teacher, Eva Benitez, Andre Bryant and Marcus as students representing different backgrounds. Data collection involved character analysis, dialogue examination, and behavioral observation throughout the film.
The findings indicate that Erin Gruel demonstrated fairness by managing the classroom fairly and wisely, using the story of the Holocaust to build empathy among students. At the same time, Eva Benitez demonstrated moral courage by testifying openly in court despite the personal risks she faced and gradually built trust as she began to distance herself from gang loyalty. These moral values reflect significant character development, shaped by moral decisions and a challenging social environment.
