Abstract

Misconception is a wrong understanding of a concept. One concept that often experiences misconception is light. Light has several properties, namely penetrating transparent objects, being reflected, traveling in a straight line, being refracted, and being able to be explained. The purpose of this study was to determine the percentage and factors that influence misconceptions on light material among students at MTs Bustanul Ulum Pagelaran, Malang Regency. This study used Two-Tier Diagnostic Multiple Choice for test measurement and to measure the factors causing misconceptions using a questionnaire. The diagnostic test consists of two levels of questions, the first level contains multiple-choice questions. The second level asks students to explain the reasons for their choice of answers in the first level. Meanwhile, the questionnaire consists of 25 questions asking about the factors causing misconceptions. The highest average misconception was on the question of image formation in a convex mirror with a percentage value of 45.00%.The lowest was on the question describing the refraction of light, with 12.50%. The average student misconception was 32%, which falls into the moderate category. Factors contributing to misconceptions include student factors (7.7%), learning methods (84.6%), and teacher factors (substitute teachers). Student misconceptions on light were 32%. The highest misconception was on image formation in convex mirrors, with 45%. Misconceptions were also caused by low student interest in learning. This was due to teacher factors, particularly substitute teachers, and learning methods, with teachers dominating the serama method and a lack of method variation, such as practical work.
