Abstract

Abstract. The phenomenon of juvenile delinquency increased year after year. In 2021, Indonesia experienced a 10.7% increase in juvenile delinquency compared to 2020. Based on BPS data, it was found that 34.6% of criminals were male teenagers aged 16–19 years. Furthermore, 15.1% of female adolescents became pregnant before marriage and 59% of female adolescents had engaged in sexual intercourse. Juvenile delinquency occurred due to a lack of instillation of social values and norms, which led to deviant behavior. During adolescence, individuals generally tended to have low emotional control abilities, so they were easily exposed to negative influences from outside. Therefore, parents' role was crucial in providing support and guidance so that adolescents could regulate their emotions. In general, women were able to express their emotions freely, while men tended to suppress them.
This study used quantitative methods to examine the relationship between variables. It involved 155 adolescents aged 15–17 years using a purposive sampling technique. The instruments used in this study were the Emotional Regulation Scale (Gross, 2014) and the Juvenile Delinquency Scale (Permatasari, 2021). The data analysis technique used was the Independent Sample t-test to determine the comparison of male and female emotional regulation. The results showed a negative influence of male emotional regulation on juvenile delinquency. However, no significant influence was found for female emotional regulation on juvenile delinquency.
