Abstract

The death of a spouse in women is considered to have long-term effects. The death of a spouse brings new challenges for women in terms of financial decline, negative stigma for widowed women, and loneliness, all of which are considered to affect psychological well-being. Psychological well-being, as a positive condition for optimal life, is known to increase with a high sense of community. Sense of community contributes to the level of psychological well-being, both cognitively related to the community as a source of learning to face new challenges, and affectively related to involvement in positive experiences. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of sense of community on the psychological well-being of women who experienced the death of a spouse. This study used a quantitative method with simple linear regression analysis. This study used two scales: the Sense of Community Index 2 (SCI-2) and the Psychological Well-Being Scale. The sampling technique used was a purposive sample, with characteristics of women, experiencing the death of a spouse, and participating in a community. Data collected from 91 respondents, with the results confirming that sense of community has a positive effect on psychological well-being by 8.4% (R² = 0.084).
