Abstract

The development of digital technology has led to an increasing prevalence of phubbing, the habit of ignoring face-to-face social interactions in favor of mobile phone activities. One factor underlying phubbing is the Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), the fear of being left out of other people's social experiences shared through digital media. Self-control is crucial for adolescents to curb the urge to phub due to FoMO. This study aims to determine whether self-control, as a moderator, can weaken phubbing in adolescents caused by FoMO. The research method used in this study was quantitative, with 236 adolescent mobile phone users participating, using an accidental sampling technique. The scales used in this study were the Online Fear of Missing Out (ON-FoMO) Scale, the Generic Scale of Phubbing (GSP), and the Brief Self-Control Scale (BSCS). The results of this study indicate that FoMO influences phubbing behavior in adolescents, with higher levels of FoMO leading to higher levels of phubbing. Other findings in this study also indicate that self-control does not moderate the effect of FoMO on phubbing.
