Abstract

Final-year students often face intense academic and social pressure during the
thesis writing process. This pressure can trigger psychological issues, including the
phenomenon of Fear of Missing Out (FoMO), which refers to the anxiety of being left behind
in comparison to others' achievements. Self-esteem is considered an important factor in
managing negative self-perceptions, as individuals with low self-esteem are more likely to
experience FoMO due to a lack of confidence and a tendency to compare themselves to
others. This study aims to examine the relationship between self-esteem and FoMO among
final-year university students. The research employed a quantitative correlational method
with 209 final-year students in Indonesia selected using accidental sampling. The instruments
used were the Self-Liking and Self-Competence Scale-Revised (SLCS-R) for measuring selfesteem and the Fear of Missing Out Scale (FoMOs) developed by Kaloeti for measuring
FoMO. The results showed that the majority of respondents had high self-esteem (84.2%) and
moderate FoMO levels (57.4%). Pearson correlation analysis indicated a strong negative
relationship between self-esteem and FoMO (r = -0.796, p < 0.05), suggesting that higher
self-esteem is associated with lower FoMO levels. The study concludes that self-esteem plays
a significant role in reducing the fear of missing out. Therefore, enhancing self-esteem can be
an effective strategy to help final-year students manage anxiety and remain focused during
the thesis process.
