Abstract

This study aims to analyze and conceptualize the power relations in the social
interaction of employers and domestic workers of different ethnicities. The theory
used as an analytical tool is Foucault's power relations theory. The method used in
this study is a qualitative method with a descriptive type. Data were collected
through field observations, in-depth interviews and documentation. The subjects
of the study consisted of 10 people, consisting of 5 domestic workers, and 5
employers. The results of the study showed that the power relations in the social
interaction between employers and domestic workers of different ethnicities have
various patterns. The power relations patterns in question consist of associative
power relations patterns and dissociative power relations patterns. Associative
power relations patterns, the relationship between domestic workers and
employers is positive. The interaction tends to be fine. If a dispute occurs, both
parties resolve it well without any violence. The associative power relations
pattern is seen in (1) the interaction of Javanese domestic workers with Minang
employers, (2) Malay domestic workers with Javanese employers, (3) Javanese
domestic workers with Rejang employers, and (4) Javanese domestic worker with
Rejang employers. Meanwhile, the dissociative power relation pattern is a relation
pattern that tends to create division, conflict and disputes between domestic
workers and employers. Although the power relation pattern is dissociative, the
consequences that arise do not appear openly. The dissociative pattern can be seen
in, ethnic Lembak employers with domestic workers from the Rejang ethnic
group. The social interaction between employers and domestic workers is also
marked by the birth of new knowledge, namely the birth of habits and rules
agreed upon by both parties, to be implemented and obeyed together.
