Abstract

Adolescence is a transitional period characterized by the development of independence in facing various challenges. This stage is often accompanied by uncertainty, which can increase the risk of experiencing depressive symptoms. One factor associated with depressive symptoms is difficulty in emotion regulation. This study aims to analyze the relationship between difficulties in emotion regulation and depressive symptoms among adolescents. The research employed a correlational quantitative design. Participants in this study were adolescents aged 18–24 years, involving a total of 412 respondents. Data were collected using the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II) to measure depression levels and the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale–Short Form (DERS-SF) to assess difficulties in emotion regulation. The correlation analysis yielded a coefficient of 0.557** (p < .001), indicating a significant and moderately strong positive relationship between difficulties in emotion regulation and depressive symptoms among adolescents. This means that the higher the difficulty in regulating emotions, the higher the level of depressive symptoms, and conversely, the lower the difficulty in emotion regulation, the lower the depressive symptoms in adolescents. This study highlights the importance of developing emotion regulation skills as a preventive and intervention effort to reduce depressive symptoms in adolescents.
