Abstract

Loneliness is one of the common psychological problems in adolescents, especially for those who live far from their families, such as in Islamic boarding schools. Family functioning is believed to play an important role in reducing the level of loneliness in adolescents. This study aims to determine the relationship between family functioning and loneliness in adolescents living in Islamic boarding schools. The research approach used is quantitative with a correlational design. The subjects in this study were 375 adolescents aged 15–19 years who lived in Islamic boarding schools and were selected using a purposive sampling technique. The instruments used were the Family Assessment Device (FAD) to measure family functioning, and the UCLA Loneliness Scale Ver 3 to measure the level of loneliness. Data analysis was carried out using the Pearson’r correlation test via SPSS for Windows version 30.0. The results of the study showed a significant negative relationship between family functioning and loneliness (r = -0.736 p <0.001). This means that the higher the family functioning felt by adolescents, the lower the level of loneliness they experience. Thus, it can be concluded that family functioning has an important role in reducing the level of loneliness in adolescents living in Islamic boarding schools.
