Abstract

STEM is an idea that unites four disciplines, namely Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, which are connected to surrounding phenomena and real-world problems. The application of STEM in the field of education is so important, in an era that is so massive in technological developments that encourage humans to have the skills to apply several fields of science. One practical way to apply STEM is through extracurricular robotics, which is now quite widely adopted in school institutions, including elementary schools. This study aims to describe the STEM content contained in extracurricular robotics in elementary schools.

This research uses a qualitative approach with a descriptive qualitative type with the research subjects being the coach teacher, trainer, and robotics extracurricular students in 2 elementary schools, namely SD Negeri Punten 01 Batu City and SD Muhammadiyah 4 Malang City. Data analysis in this study includes data collection stages, data condensation, data display and conclusion drawing/verification. Data collection methods used observation, interviews and documentation. Furthermore, to check the validity of the data using triangulation techniques and sources.

The results of the study indicate that both schools demonstrate the same indicators. For the science aspect, no indicators were observed. For the technology aspect, two out of two indicators were observed, namely: (1) Using technology such as the internet, Geogebra, AutoCAD applications, and others; and (2) Assisting and facilitating students in solving problems. For the engineering aspect, 1 out of 2 indicators were observed, namely: (1) Involving students in designing/developing procedures. Additionally, for the mathematics aspect, 2 out of 2 indicators were observed, namely: (1) Using mathematics as a language for knowledge, technology, and engineering; and (2) Applying specific mathematics topics/subtopics to solve problems. Using STEM-based content in robotics extracurricular activities provides separate understanding and approaches that can help identify and apply robotics concepts for experts in specific scientific fields.
