Abstract

This study explores the contribution of English competency to employee performance at Bapenda Nganjuk using a qualitative narrative inquiry approach. The research aimed to answer the question: How does English competency contribute to employee performance in Bapenda Nganjuk? Data were collected through questionnaires and unstructured interviews with eight employees across various organizational levels. The findings revealed that English competency, particularly in reading and listening, enhances employees’ effectiveness in tasks such as interpreting documents, using English-based applications, and navigating digital systems. While speaking and writing skills were less frequently used, they were recognized as critical for professional development and external communication. Challenges included limited training, low confidence, and infrequent opportunities to practice English. Thematic analysis of participant narratives shows that English competency contributes to performance by improving efficiency, reducing errors, enhancing communication, and fostering adaptability in a digitalized public service environment. The study recommends tailored training programs, integration of English in daily routines, and leadership support to build a language-focused workplace culture, ultimately improving productivity and preparing the institution for broader engagement.
