Abstract

This study described the types, factors, and management strategies of speaking anxiety among ninth-grade students at Daarul Ukhuwwah Islamic Boarding School in Malang, using a mixed-method design with questionnaires and interviews (30 participants). Findings identified three anxiety types: state anxiety (60% during spontaneous speaking), situation-specific anxiety (30-40% in assessments), and trait anxiety (33% persistent nervousness), driven by internal (e.g., fear of mistakes) and external factors (e.g., peer judgment). Students employed four key coping strategies: self-preparation (vocabulary/grammar review), peer collaboration (normalizing mistakes), teacher guidance (reframing corrections), and limited relaxation techniques, addressing linguistic, social, and emotional challenges. Suggestions include integrating preparatory exercises, alternative assessments, and leveraging students' organic strategies alongside stress-reduction techniques. The study underscores the need for context-specific interventions in religious education settings, suggesting further research on tailored strategies for similar environments.
