Abstract

This study aimed to explore the types of learning styles used by students and how these styles were applied in speaking learning at the English Club at SMA Negeri 1 Nunukan. The study used a descriptive qualitative research design with a case study approach. Six students were selected as participants through purposive and snowball sampling techniques. Data collection was carried out through observation and semi-structured interviews, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman model which included data reduction, data presentation, and drawing conclusions.
The results of the study showed that there were four dominant learning styles applied by students, namely visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic (VARK). Each student showed a different way of applying their learning style to speaking activities. Students with a visual learning style were helped through videos, visual notes, and concept maps. Auditory students improved their speaking skills by listening to English songs, imitating pronunciation, and discussing. Reading/writing students preferred reading texts, taking notes, and rewriting materials in preparation for speaking. Meanwhile, kinesthetic students developed speaking skills through movement, role-playing, and hands-on practice. This study concluded that recognizing and applying students' learning styles in speaking activities can increase students' engagement, confidence, and performance.
