Abstract

The increasing use of TikTok among college students, who use the platform to express themselves, gain social validation, and build personal branding. However, the intensity of this social media use can give rise to narcissistic traits, such as the desire to be the center of attention, the desire to dominate, and the thirst for recognition. This study aims to describe the level of narcissistic tendencies in college students who use TikTok using a descriptive quantitative method on 304 respondents. This study used a narcissistic tendency measurement tool with a Likert scale based on seven aspects of narcissism: authority, self-sufficiency, superiority, exhibitionism, exploitativeness, vanity, and entitlement. The results showed that the level of narcissism of college students was mostly in the high category with a percentage of 53%, reflecting self-confidence, ambition to succeed, attention to appearance, and the need for social recognition. The dominant narcissistic aspects are authority, self-sufficiency and exploitativeness, indicating the desire to lead, feel capable of doing everything alone, and have the desire to take advantage of others for personal gain. These findings imply that although narcissism can motivate students to succeed, this trait also has the potential to cause problems in interpersonal relationships and emotional management. Therefore, the results of this study are expected to be the basis for developing educational strategies to encourage students to use social media wisely to avoid Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD).
