Abstract
Background: Diabetes Mellitus Type 2 was one of the most common chronic diseases affecting the community and posed a high risk of complications if blood glucose levels were not controlled. Non-adherence to insulin therapy and lack of physical activity could worsen the condition, including the development of peripheral neuropathy. The combination of insulin therapy and foot exercise was considered an effective approach to help reduce blood glucose levels and improve the patient’s physical condition. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of combining insulin therapy and foot exercise on the reduction of blood glucose levels in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2.
Methods: This study used a case study design conducted over 3 days in the Parangtritis room of RSUD Dr. Saiful Anwar Malang. The intervention consisted of administering NovoRapid®️ insulin before meals based on medical prescription, along with daily foot exercise performed once a day for 20 minutes after insulin administration. Blood glucose levels were measured daily before and after the intervention using a glucometer.
Results: The results showed a gradual decrease in blood glucose levels after the intervention. On the first day, blood glucose decreased from 272 mg/dL to 241 mg/dL, on the second day from 230 mg/dL to 205 mg/dL, and on the third day from 198 mg/dL to 172 mg/dL. In addition, the patient reported feeling more comfortable, with reduced tingling, better sleep quality, and improved physical stamina.
Conclusion: The combination of insulin therapy and foot exercise proved effective in reducing blood glucose levels and improving the patient’s physical condition. This intervention could be implemented as a supportive nursing strategy in the management of diabetes mellitus type 2.
