Abstract
Symbols play an important role in shaping the identity and cultural communication of a region. Sumenep Regency uses the Flying Horse symbol as part of its regional attributes, representing the values of courage, gallantry, and the indomitable spirit of its people. This symbol is rooted in local history and mythology that has been passed down through generations. However, in the era of modernization, questions arise regarding how the Flying Horse symbol is perceived by the millennial generation within the context of Sumenep’s regional attributes in their daily lives. This study aims to analyze the millennial generation’s interpretation of the Flying Horse symbol as a regional emblem of Sumenep Regency. A qualitative approach was employed using a case study method, along with Robert K. Yin’s data analysis techniques. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with eight informants representing Sumenep’s millennial generation. The analysis technique used includes pattern matching and explanation building to understand how this symbol is constructed in the minds of young people. The results show that the Flying Horse symbol is interpreted by Sumenep's millennials as a representation of regional pride and bravery. However, differences in interpretation were found. Some informants regard it as a cultural heritage that must be preserved, while others see it as a myth that lacks relevance in modern life. Modernization has influenced how the millennial generation perceives this symbol. Nevertheless, there remains an awareness of the importance of cultural identity, highlighting the need for cultural initiatives and promotion to ensure the Flying Horse symbol continues to hold meaningful value within the community.
