Abstract
Background: RDS is a common condition that occurs in neonates, especially
premature infants born before 32 weeks of gestation. RDS is caused by a lack of
surfactant needed to maintain the stability of the alveoli. This study aims to
evaluate the application of the quarter prone position as a non-pharmacological
intervention to increase oxygen saturation in infants with RDS.
Method: This study used a case study design with one subject, a baby who was
born with RDS. The interventions performed included airway management and
the application of the quarter prone position for 60 minutes. Data collected
included oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, and pulse rate before and after the
intervention.
Results: After the application of the quarter prone position, there was an increase
in oxygen saturation from 96% to 98%. The respiratory rate also decreased from
64x/minute to 53x/minute, while the pulse rate showed a decrease from
159x/minute to 125x/minute.
Conclusion: The application of the quarter prone position can be an effective
intervention in increasing oxygen saturation in infants with RDS. This study
recommends the use of the quarter prone position as part of the care protocol for
RDS patients in the perinatology room.
