Abstract

This study aims to analyze the criminological fator that drive interns to
commit the crime of stealing bank customers’ funds. The study stems from a real case involving an intern who misused trust and access at a bank in Malang to withdraw Rp52,000,000 from a customer’s account. This research uses an empirical juridical approach and is analyzed through Robert K. Merton’s Strain Theory and Travis Hirschi’s Social Control Theory. The findings show that economic pressure, a consumptive lifestyle, weak institutional supervision, and a lack of internal self control are the primary factors behind the deviant behavior. According to strain theory, the perpetrator experienced tension between the desire to fulfill lifestyle needs and limited legal access to do so, leading to criminal actions as a form of “deviant innovation.” Meanwhile, social control theory emphasizes the weak emotional and normative bonds between the intern and societal or professional standards. This case highlights the urgency of ethical training and strengthened supervision systems during internship programs to prevent misuse of professional roles. The research contributes to the development of criminal law and the prevention of crime in the banking sector.
