Abstract

. Many gym-goers exercise not only for health reasons but also to achieve an ideal body standard often influenced by social media and popular culture. This phenomenon can trigger dissatisfaction with physical appearance and increase the risk of Body Dysmorphic Disorder (BDD). This study aims to examine the relationship between body image and the tendency toward BDD in men and women who actively work out at gyms in Malang City. A total of 100 respondents were selected using accidental sampling. Body image was measured using the Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ-34), while the tendency toward BDD was assessed using an adapted scale from Phillips (2009). Data were analyzed using Spearman's correlation test via the JASP application. The results showed a rho value of 0.579 (p < .001), indicating a positive relationship between body image and BDD tendency. The ρ² value of 0.335 suggests that 33.5% of the variation in BDD can be explained by body image. The remaining variation is influenced by other factors, such as perfectionism, cognitive distortion, and the impact of social media. These findings highlight the importance of interventions such as psychoeducation and cognitive therapy.
