Abstract
Language functions as a communication tool as well as a marker of group identity, such as the unique jargon in the fishing community of Weru Village. As an area with a majority of fishermen, the community uses special terms that are only understood within the group, especially when discussing fishing gear, weather, or fishing activities. This study aims to understand and describe the use of jargon in the fishermen community in Weru Village while analyzing it through the background identity model, which connects language variation with the identity of speakers, speech partners, and speech settings.
The approach used in this research is a qualitative approach by producing descriptive data to describe the use of jargon in the fishermen community in Weru Village. Data collection was carried out by listening to the use of jargon spoken by the fishing community in Weru Village on the Pagon Pae Channel YouTube channel.
This study examines the use of jargon within the fishermen's association in Weru Village, Paciran District, Lamongan Regency, through the lens of the identity-background model in sociolinguistics. Based on data from the Pagon Pae Channel YouTube account, a total of 34 jargon expressions were identified in the community’s interactions. Speakers produced 9 jargon words and 13 jargon phrases, while speech partners contributed 9 jargon words and 3 phrases.
The functions of these jargons varied according to the speech setting. In the association setting, jargon primarily served informational, humorous, persuasive, advisory, and complimentary roles. Meanwhile, in the fish auction location (TPI), its functions were limited to conveying information, expressing praise, and posing questions. These findings suggest that the use of jargon not only facilitates technical communication but also strengthens group identity and social cohesion within the fishing community. The identity-background model highlights how speaker identity, interlocutor characteristics, and communication settings influence the forms and functions of language used in daily interactions.
