Abstract

his study aims to evaluate the potential of carbon dioxide (CO2) absorption by the Malabar
City Forest in Malang as an effort to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions in the context of
increasingly urgent climate change. The research was conducted in the Malabar City
Forest, Malang, to assess the potential for CO2 absorption through the analysis of tree
biomass, necromass, and litter, using non-destructive sampling methods and allometric
equations. Additionally, this study compares the differences in microclimate between the
areas inside and outside the Malabar City Forest using an independent sample T-test to
understand the impact of vegetation on temperature, humidity, and light intensity. The
results indicate that the total biomass reaches 5,324.2 tons/ha, with a carbon reserve of
2,449.13 tons/ha and a CO2 absorption capacity of 8,988 tons/ha, as well as significant
differences in temperature and light intensity between the areas inside and outside the
Malabar City Forest. The Malabar City Forest, covering an area of 1.6 ha, has a carbon
reserve of 2,449.2 tons/ha and the ability to absorb carbon dioxide of 8,988.3 tons/ha, with
a total biomass of 5,324.2 tons/ha. While there are significant differences in temperature
and light intensity between the areas inside and outside the forest, humidity does not show
a significant difference. It is hoped that this study will raise public awareness of the
importance of preserving trees and urban forests in reducing carbon emissions and
greenhouse gases.
