Abstract
This study aims to identify plant species growing along the roads of Campus III,
University of Muhammadiyah Malang, assess their health conditions, and estimate
their carbon dioxide (CO₂) absorption potential. The method used involved a 2
meter wide belt transect survey on both sides left and right of the campus roads
Universitas Muhammadiyah Malang, supported by visual assessments of tree health
including leaf, trunk, and root conditions. The results revealed a total of 38 plant
species comprising 735 individual trees and shrubs. The most dominant species
were Acalypha wilkesiana (Daung Mangsi), Wodyetia bifurcata (Foxtail Palm), and
Tabebuia chrysotricha (Yellow Tabebuia). Several plants showed symptoms of
health deterioration such as leaf desiccation, trunk wounds, and caterpillar
infestations. Carbon absorption was estimated based on scientific literature,
indicating that species like Samanea saman (Rain Tree), Tabebuia rosea, and
Tabebuia chrysotricha play a significant role in CO₂ sequestration. The findings
underscore the ecological and environmental value of campus vegetation in
improving air quality and providing aesthetic benefits. The study recommends a
more balanced distribution of plant species and regular maintenance to enhance
their ecological function across the university landscape.
