Abstract

With the growing popularity of social media, there is a noticeable tendency among users, including university students, to follow the lifestyle standards displayed on these platforms. Social media serves as a space for self-expression and identity formation, which influences how students perceive themselves and the image they wish to present. As a result, many students feel compelled to conform to the trends and standards that emerge in the digital world. Therefore, it is important to conduct research to gain a deeper understanding of this self-comparison phenomenon. This study uses a descriptive quantitative method to describe the phenomenon of self-comparison on social media among university students. The research subjects are students aged 18–24 years who are active social media users. The sampling technique used is convenience sampling. The research instruments include a questionnaire based on the INCOM scale and structured interviews. Data analysis in this study employs descriptive statistical methods. Based on the completed questionnaires, a total of 392 respondents were obtained. The results of the data processing show that the average score is 37.48. These findings indicate that most students occasionally engage in self-comparison on social media, particularly in relation to abilities and achievements. The level of comparison is influenced by factors such as gender, usage intensity, the platforms used, and the type of content they are interested in.
