Abstract

Body dissatisfaction refers to a condition resulting from the perceived
discrepancy between one’s own body and the idealized bodies of others. This study aims to examine the influence of self-esteem and appearance ideal internalization on body dissatisfaction among early adult women in Malang City who are active Instagram users. A quantitative approach with multiple linear regression analysis was employed. A total of 390 female respondents aged 20–30 years who actively use Instagram participated in this study. The instruments used included the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES), the Sociocultural Attitudes Towards Appearance Questionnaire-4 Revision (SATAQ-4R), and the Body Dissatisfaction Scale (BDS). The results revealed that self-esteem and appearance ideal internalization simultaneously had a significant effect on body dissatisfaction (F = 230.115; p < 0.001), with a contribution of 54.3%. Partially, self-esteem had a significant negative effect on body dissatisfaction (β = -1.308; p < 0.001), while appearance ideal internalization had a significant positive effect (β = 1.695; p < 0.001). These findings suggest that low self-esteem and high internalization of appearance ideals increase the risk of body dissatisfaction. Therefore, efforts to enhance self-esteem and educate women on more realistic beauty standards are essential to prevent negative psychological impacts among early adult women.
