Abstract

This study aims to identify the forms and causes of Malay language interference in Indonesian during verbal interactions between students and teachers at SMP Muhammadiyah Nunukan. The school's location at the Indonesia-Malaysia border leads to intensive language contact, resulting in various types of interference. The research adopts a descriptive qualitative approach, utilizing observation, interviews, and recorded conversations as data collection techniques. The findings indicate four main forms of interference: phonological, morphological, syntactic, and lexical. Phonological interference includes sound changes such as “tak” for “tidak” and “balek” for “balik”. Morphological interference appears in words like “minit” for “menit” and “nak” for “ingin”. Syntactic interference is observed in sentence structures that follow Malay patterns, such as “pinjam sama kawan”. Lexical interference is evident in the use of typical Malay vocabulary such as “sikit”, “tandas”, and “kerja rumah”. Factors contributing to interference include bilingual social conditions, low linguistic awareness, and the influence of migration and media. The study highlights the importance of promoting standard Indonesian language education in border areas to mitigate the negative impacts of language interference.
