Abstract
Fitrah Maulana Almaliki. Student ID Number 202010040311544. Students' Interpretations of the Suicide Case of Nadaa J.W., a Student at Semarang State University, in a VIVA.CO.ID News Article (Analytical Study of Communication Science Students' Receptions of the 2020 Class of Students at the University of Muhammadiyah Malang). Bachelor's Thesis, Communication Science Study Program, Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, University of Muhammadiyah Malang, 2024.
Mental health in Asia, especially in Indonesia, is still considered taboo and carries a negative stigma, leading many people to remain open about their mental health issues. In 2023, numerous suicide cases were recorded between January and October, with 971 cases recorded in Indonesia, with the highest number of suicides in Central Java, with 359 cases recorded. News broadcasts and articles frequently report on suicide cases each month, including one in Semarang. A student at UNNES (Semarang State University) named Nadaa Jiilaana Waffiananda allegedly jumped from the fourth floor of Paragon Mall Semarang, estimated to be 20 meters high, on October 10, 2023. One of the news articles from VIVA.CO.ID, titled "UNNES Student Dies by Committing Suicide at Paragon Mall Semarang, Contents of will are Heartbreaking," contains the contents of the letter and a brief chronology of Nadaa J.W.'s suicide. The purpose of this study was to determine how students accepted Nadaa J.W.'s suicide in the VIVA.CO.ID news article. This study used a qualitative descriptive approach. The theory used was acceptance analysis theory with Stuart Hall's coding-decoding theory. Data collection techniques were conducted using interviews and documentation.
The results of this study indicate that there are various interpretations from the subjects regarding the news article from VIVA.CO.ID entitled "UNNES Student Dies by Committing Suicide at Paragon Mall Semarang, Contents of will are Heartbreaking." Of the five subjects who received feedback, all were in a negotiating position with varying opinions. No subject held a dominant or oppositional position in the VIVA.CO.ID news article.
