Abstract

This research aims to analyze the factors causing junior high school dropout among adolescents, with a case study in Singosari District, Malang Regency. The research focuses on identifying internal and external factors influencing adolescents' decision to stop schooling, as well as understanding the role of social, economic, cultural, and family aspects in this process. A qualitative research method with a case study approach was employed. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with out-of-school adolescents, parents, and village and sub-district officials. The findings reveal several key factors. Internal factors include parents' lack of internalization regarding the importance of formal education, minimal cultural support for education, and family economic limitations. External factors encompass peer influence, invitations from friends participating in the "bantengan" community, and accessibility constraints such as long distances to school, lack of personal transportation, and high transportation costs. The analysis, utilizing Pierre Bourdieu's theory of social practice, indicates that adolescents' decisions to drop out of school are not individual, but rather influenced by the interaction between habitus, capital (economic, cultural, social), and arena. Habitus is evident in the mindset of the family and social environment, capital reflects resource limitations, while arena encompasses educational accessibility, such as the distance from home to school. Thus, the issue of school dropout is understood not only from an individual perspective but also from the social system that shapes their choices.
