Abstract
Mathematical problem-solving skills are higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) important to develop in 21st-century learning. These skills require students to not only understand concepts but also be able to analyze, evaluate, and design solutions in complex contexts. Curiosity plays a role in encouraging student engagement during the problem-solving process. This study aims to analyze the mathematical problem-solving skills of the HOTS type based on students' curiosity levels, namely high, moderate, and low. Subjects were selected based on the results of a curiosity questionnaire. This study employs a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through HOTS-type mathematical problems analyzed using Polya's steps and interviews to explore students' thinking processes. The study results indicate differences in thinking patterns and problem-solving strategies across curiosity levels. Students with high curiosity demonstrate flexibility in thinking, perseverance, and more in-depth strategy evaluation. Students with moderate curiosity exhibit a procedural and stable approach but are limited to strategies they have mastered, and evaluations focused solely on the outcome. Students with low curiosity demonstrated varying abilities; some could solve problems in a structured manner, while others encountered obstacles from the beginning of the process. These findings illustrate the variation in mathematical problem-solving approaches at each level of curiosity, reflecting differences in students' learning experiences and thinking habits.
