Abstract

Mathematical communication skills are important in learning mathematics because they allow students to express ideas, develop solution steps, and draw conclusions logically. Mathematical communication is key in the context of Minimum Competency Assessment (AKM) questions because the questions are designed based on real-life contexts and demand representation and reasoning. This study aims to describe students' mathematical communication skills in solving numeracy AKM problems with algebraic content and personal context. The research used a descriptive qualitative approach with the subjects of six students of class X SMA Negeri 2 Surabaya who were categorized into three levels of mathematical ability: high, medium, and low. Data were collected through written tests of AKM questions and interviews to reinforce the analysis. The results showed that students with high mathematical ability showed good mathematical communication, although some still had difficulties in written communication. Students with medium ability could represent ideas systematically but were inconsistent in concluding the solution. Meanwhile, students with low ability experienced problems in interpreting problems, constructing mathematical models, and presenting solutions in a structured manner. These findings indicate that the student's mathematical ability level does not fully determine their mathematical communication ability, so a learning approach is needed.
