Abstract
This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the Project-Based Learning (PjBL) model integrated with the STEAM approach in improving the numeracy literacy and mathematical communication skills of vocational high school (SMK) students. The background of this research stems from the low numeracy and communication skills among SMK students, which are essential competencies for the 21st-century workforce. This research employs a quantitative approach using a quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest design. The research subjects consisted of 30 students from class XI of the Electrical Power Installation Engineering program at SMK Muhammadiyah 3 Gresik. Data were collected through pretests and posttests, classroom observation checklists, and oral mathematical communication rubrics.
The results show that the implementation of PjBL with the STEAM approach is categorized as highly effective. Students' numeracy literacy and communication abilities significantly improved after the implementation of the model, as evidenced by paired sample t-test results with significance values < 0.05 across three learning cycles. These findings indicate that the PjBL-STEAM model is effective in enhancing the numeracy and communication skills of vocational students. The research offers practical implications for the development of contextual learning models aligned with the demands of the modern workforce and 21st-century curricula.
