Abstract
Background: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic, lifelong, incurable disease characterized by elevated blood glucose levels and can lead to a variety of serious complications, including diabetic ulcers that impact the physical and psychological condition of the sufferer. Diabetic ulcers often cause pain discomfort and limitation in mobilization which can worsen the quality of life of the sufferer. Continued neglect of these wounds can lead to more serious complications (amputation and death). The psychological impact of a long-healing wound is feelings of hopelessness, sadness, and fear. Objective: to explore the psychological experiences of people with diabetes in long-term wound care. Methods: This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach to patients at RUMAT (Diabetes Wound Care Home) Lawang. Data collection techniques using semi-structured interviews. Data analysis uses domain analysis which explains the overall picture of the subject under study. To increase data validity, source triangulation was carried out by involving the patient's two children as informants. Results: This study produced three main themes related to the psychological experience of diabetics in wound care, namely the emergence of feelings of hopelessness during illness, fear of complications (amputation and death), and coping strategies used during the healing process. Conclusion: eople with diabetic wounds experience significant psychological challenges, such as anxiety and fear related to the lengthy wound healing process, as well as the potential for more serious complications (amputation and death). This study emphasizes a comprehensive approach to wound care that includes not only medical treatment, but also adequate psychological support to help sufferers manage the emotional impact of the disease.
