Abstract
This study aims to analyze the factors influencing food waste behavior among households in
East Balikpapan District and to propose solutions for reducing such behavior. Five
independent variables were examined: shopping routines, individual rice consumption habits,
methods of rice preparation, food handling, and waste prevention behavior, with food waste as
the dependent variable. A quantitative approach was employed, involving 100 purposively
selected respondents from four sub-districts within East Balikpapan. Data were analyzed using
the SmartPLS application. The results revealed that four variables shopping routines, rice
consumption habits, methods of rice preparation, and food handling significantly influence
food waste behavior. In contrast, waste prevention behavior did not have a significant effect.
Furthermore, the implementation of educational outreach proved effective in enhancing
respondents’ understanding and habits regarding food waste, as evidenced by the Wilcoxon test
results. These findings underscore the importance of educational efforts aimed at changing
household habits to sustainably reduce food waste at the household level.
