Abstract

This research examines audience reception of news coverage of the Rohingya refugees, with a focus on various Islamic thought groups. The research aims to identify how these Islamic thought groups perceive and respond to media portrayals of the Rohingya crisis, which are characterized by negative writing and sensationalism. Using Struart Hall's theory, the research categorizes audience responses into dominant, negotiated and oppositional positions. Through FGDs (focus group discussions) with representatives from various Islamic group organizations in Malang including IPNU, IPPNU, KAMMI, IMM, and Hizbul Wathan, the findings of this study show variations in acceptance and criticism of media narratives. FGD results also showed the arguments of some informants who expressed sympathy for the plight of the Rohingya, while others highlighted the potential security threats posed by the influx of refugees. This research underscores the importance of balanced media writing and the need for a humanitarian approach in addressing refugee issues, which influences a more diverse understanding of the reception surrounding Rohingya news coverage.
